Our "Write for Rights" stall on Bishopthorpe Road in December 2019 |
This was part of "Write for Rights", which is one of the world's biggest events in support of people who are unfairly oppressed and persecuted.
At our event, members of the public wrote about 100 cards to a mixture of people.
Yasaman Aryani believes that women in Iran should have the right to choose whether or not they wear a veil in public - and was put in jail.
Magai Matiop Ngong is in prison in South Sudan. He was convicted when he was only 15 years old - and sentenced to death.
Thank you to everyone who came to our stall.
Transgender People Face Difficulties in Nepal
Our monthly meeting in December 2019 |
At our monthly meeting on 10 December 2019, Rukshana Kapali gave an informative and well-received talk. She explained how, in Nepal, official documents use "other" to categorise transgender people and this makes it difficult or impossible for them to do ordinary things such as applying for a place at university.
January Monthly Meeting
Our monthly meeting this month takes place on Tuesday 14 January at the usual venue - York Friends Meeting House, Friargate, York YO1 9RL. We have a guest speaker: Laize Benevides, a human rights defender, who is on a fellowship at the Centre for Applied Human Rights at the University of York. She is a human rights lawyer from Brazil. She will discuss her work in the "favela" slums of Rio de Janeiro, focussing on the abuse of street children, humanitarian problems and the challenges of working as a lawyer in very difficult times. The meeting starts at 7.00 pm with our guest's talk followed by questions and answers then continues (from 8.00 pm) with our group's Annual General Meeting and regular business meeting. You are welcome to attend and, if you like, to leave after our guest's talk.
